Beyond Recycling encourages kids to embrace sustainable living in their communities

Beyond Recycling is a program that inspires and educates youth about making environmental changes in their homes and communities. Through a solutions-focused approach to sustainability, intermediate students in Kootenay, British Columbia, learn how everyday actions have a greater environmental impact on the world, and use their knowledge to improve their community.

Over the course of six months, students learn about recycling and sustainability by exploring a solutions-focused approach to energy, consumption and waste. Students visit recycling and waste facilities to learn about composting and waste management, study sustainable agriculture at local farms and learn about renewable energy technologies while planning sustainable cities of the future.

The Beyond Recycling program is having a big impact in the Kootenay region. Students from 12 Kootenay-area schools have completed over 1,200 EcoChallenge projects to reduce personal and household ecological footprints. Students bring their knowledge into their homes and community by cleaning up litter, painting fish on storm drains and turning their trash into up-cycled treasure. They are also having an impact abroad, raising money for village wells in Tanzania to bring sustainable resources to communities in need on the other side of the world.
