Workshops bring science to students

Every time Scientists in School enters a classroom, their goal is to encourage students to dream big and think about a future career that they may have never thought possible.

The Scientists in School program provides innovative hands-on workshops for young Canadians from kindergarten to grade eight. These inspired workshops instill fundamental skills, pique interest in science and engineering careers, and help students link scientific concepts to their world and learn through discovery.

These half-day experiences bring professionals to schools for an immersive experience. While kids become scientists, teachers gain professional development ideas that align with provincial curricula. Parents join in as “lab assistants” in a collaborative approach.

Since 1989, Scientists in School workshops have reached over seven million youth. Support from NSERC’s PromoScience Program has been essential in helping Scientists in School engage over 660,000  young scientists annually across Ontario and Alberta, and more recently develop beyond-school programming, open a Calgary branch, and increase their focus for rural, low socio-economic, First Nations and Francophone youth.
