The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society Southern Alberta Chapter (CPAWS SAB) brings the Canadian wilderness into the classroom with the “Engaging Alberta’s Youth Through Science and Wilderness Education” program.
The program is offered for students in Calgary and the surrounding areas. CPAWS SAB Staff and volunteers combine indoor science-based classes and outdoor hikes into the Alberta wilderness to encourage students to develop science skills, protect the environment and strive to make a difference in their communities.
Support from NSERC’s PromoScience Program is helping CPAWS SAB deliver 50 guided hikes and 100 indoor programs annually, giving youth and teachers the opportunity to study local at-risk species, explore the habitat of the Alberta Grizzly Bear and learn the importance of conserving water, among other exciting topics.
CPAWS SAB’s programming is directed at youth in grades 2-12 and teachers throughout Southern Alberta, with a focus on rural, high needs and unrepresented schools. They have had a huge impact in the region, engaging over 100,000 students and teachers since the Chapter began offering its educational program in 1997.
