Objective

Discovery Launch Supplements provide timely resources to support early career researchers (ECRs) as they establish a Discovery Grant-funded research program. For more information on Discovery Grants, consult the program description.

Description

NSERC devotes additional funds to support ECRs through increases to Discovery Grants and through Discovery Launch Supplements. A Discovery Launch Supplement is awarded to all ECRs who are recipients of their first Discovery Grant.

Equity, diversity and inclusion

NSERC is acting on the evidence that achieving a more equitable, diverse and inclusive Canadian research enterprise is essential to creating the excellent, innovative and impactful research necessary to advance knowledge and understanding, and to respond to local, national and global challenges. This principle informs the commitments described in the Tri-agency statement on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Application and review procedures

No separate application is required for Discovery Launch Supplements. For more information on how an applicant is categorized as an ECR, refer to the Discovery Grants: applicant categories page.

Payment

ECRs who are successful in a Discovery Grants competition will receive a one-time payment of $12,500, separately from their Discovery Grant. The award term is one year; however the supplement funds may be used for the duration of the Discovery Grant.

Reporting requirements

Discovery Launch Supplement recipients are required to complete a Grants in Aid of Research Statement of Account (Form 300) at the end of each fiscal year when Discovery Launch Supplement funds are used. No report on research activity (progress or final) is required either during or at the end of the Discovery Launch Supplement period.
