Dr. Sandra Rehan is an international leader in the behavioural genetics and molecular ecology of bees. Rehan’s research lab at York University combines landscape ecology, comparative genomics and socio-demography to provide critical insights into the diversity, decline and sustainability of wild bees. Rehan is advancing our understanding of the causes of wild bee decline in urban landscapes by developing the first and most comprehensive multi-species wild bee population genomics model. These results will ultimately be used to implement effective conservation strategies, which are critically needed.

Ultimately, the outcome of Rehan’s research program will not only promote sustainable pollination services in local urban habitats but also have important consequences for climate change resilience and human well-being on a global scale, as bees play a vital role in maintaining diverse and functional green infrastructure.

In recognition of advancements in the field of biology and the study of bee ecology, Dr. Sandra Rehan is awarded a 2021 NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Prize.
